*The exact date of Woodbury's allotment to the First Circuit, presumably pursuant to a presidential order, is unknown. The first documented Supreme Court order allotting him is dated March 4, 1846. The docket book for the U.S. Circuit Court for the District of Maine in Portland, however, indicates that Woodbury began his service on the circuit courts on October 1, 1845, so that date is used here.
