Nominated by Ronald Reagan on March 11, 1982, to a seat vacated by Myron D. Crocker. Confirmed by the Senate on March 31, 1982, and received commission on April 1, 1982. Served as chief judge, 1990-1996. Assumed senior status on May 13, 1996. Service terminated on May 7, 2012, due to death.
