Nominated by Ronald Reagan on November 4, 1981, to a seat vacated by James E. Doyle. Confirmed by the Senate on December 9, 1981, and received commission on December 10, 1981. Served as chief judge, 1996-2001. Assumed senior status on January 20, 2009. Service terminated on August 31, 2012, due to death.
