1. Bolitha Laws was the last judge on the court to receive a separate appointment as chief justice. The act of June 25, 1948, 62 Stat. 869, provided that as of September 1, 1948, the chief justice of the court would be known as the chief judge. Thereafter, the position was determined by seniority as in the other U.S. district courts. 2. Pursuant to the act of December 1, 1990, 104 Stat. 5089, no successor to John Bates was appointed because his seat became vacant during his service as director of the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts. 3. The act of December 1, 1990, 104 Stat. 5089, provided for the appointment of an additional judge for the court if an active judge assumed "the duties of a full-time office of Federal judicial administration." John Bates became the director of the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts in July 2013, and Tanya Chutkan was appointed to the additional judgeship authorized by the statute.
