Received a recess appointment from Martin Van Buren on April 23, 1839, to a seat vacated by Alexander Caldwell; nominated to the same position by Martin Van Buren on January 23, 1840. Confirmed by the Senate on February 17, 1840, and received commission on February 17, 1840. Service terminated on December 6, 1845, due to resignation.
