Received a recess appointment from George Washington on September 3, 1793, to a seat vacated by Nathaniel Chipman; nominated to the same position by George Washington on December 27, 1793. Confirmed by the Senate on December 30, 1793, and received commission on January 28, 1794. Service terminated on February 20, 1801, due to appointment to another judicial position.

Nominated by John Adams on February 18, 1801, to a new seat authorized by 2 Stat. 89. Confirmed by the Senate on February 20, 1801, and received commission on February 20, 1801. Service terminated on July 1, 1802, due to abolition of the court.
