Nominated by John F. Kennedy on August 17, 1961, to a new seat authorized by 75 Stat. 80. Confirmed by the Senate on August 30, 1961, and received commission on August 30, 1961. Served as chief judge, 1962-1965. Service terminated on June 21, 1965, due to appointment to another judicial position.

Nominated by Lyndon B. Johnson on May 18, 1965, to a seat vacated by Albert Alphonso Ridge. Confirmed by the Senate on June 8, 1965, and received commission on June 8, 1965. Served as chief judge, 1974-1979. Assumed senior status on December 31, 1979. Service terminated on October 4, 2001, due to death.
