Nominated by Lyndon B. Johnson on September 15, 1965, to a seat vacated by John Patrick Hartigan. Confirmed by the Senate on October 1, 1965, and received commission on October 2, 1965. Served as chief judge, 1972-1983. Assumed senior status on February 1, 1989. Service terminated on December 7, 2009, due to death.
