U.S. Department of the Treasury

September 2, 1789

Congress created the Department of the Treasury to administer all public accounts, which included those of the clerks, marshals, and district attorneys of the federal courts (established three weeks later by the Judiciary Act of 1789). The Treasury Department maintained this responsibility until 1849, when the Department of the Interior took over the financial administration of the judiciary.
