Nominated by Dwight D. Eisenhower on August 5, 1959, to a seat vacated by Florence Ellinwood Allen. Confirmed by the Senate on September 9, 1959, and received commission on September 10, 1959. Served as chief judge, 1963-1969. Assumed senior status on December 31, 1981. Service terminated on May 22, 1997, due to death.
