Nominated by Dwight D. Eisenhower on April 6, 1954, to a seat vacated by Xenophon Hicks. Confirmed by the Senate on April 23, 1954, and received commission on April 27, 1954. Service terminated on October 13, 1958, due to appointment to another judicial position.

Received a recess appointment from Dwight D. Eisenhower on October 14, 1958, to a seat vacated by Harold Hitz Burton; nominated to the same position by Dwight D. Eisenhower on January 17, 1959. Confirmed by the Senate on May 5, 1959, and received commission on May 7, 1959. Assumed senior status on July 3, 1981. Service terminated on December 7, 1985, due to death.
