Received a recess appointment from John F. Kennedy on December 13, 1962, to a seat vacated by John W. Murphy; nominated to the same position by John F. Kennedy on January 15, 1963. Confirmed by the Senate on March 15, 1963, and received commission on March 27, 1963. Served as chief judge, 1976-1989. Assumed senior status on January 1, 1989. Service terminated on August 30, 2018, due to death.
