1. The act of April 20, 1818, 3 Stat. 462, transferred this judgeship from the District of Pennsylvania.
2. The act of February 16, 1914, 38 Stat. 283, authorized a temporary judgeship for the court and provided that the first vacancy in the office of the district judge senior in commission not be filled. In accordance with the statute, no successor to James Holland was appointed.
3. The act of September 14, 1922, 42 Stat. 837, authorized a temporary judgeship for the court and provided that the first vacancy occurring two years or more after the date of the statute in the office of the judge appointed to fill the temporary judgeship not be filled. In accordance with the statute, no successor to Charles McKeehan was appointed.
4. The act of July 24, 1946, 60 Stat. 654, authorized one judgeship to serve the Eastern, Middle, and Western Districts of Pennsylvania.
5. The act of February 10, 1954, 68 Stat. 8, assigned this judgeship to the Middle District of Pennsylvania exclusively.
6. The act of March 18, 1966, 80 Stat. 75, authorized three temporary judgeships for the court and provided that the next three vacancies in the district not be filled. The act of September 23, 1967, 81 Stat. 228, revised the 1966 act to provide that the second, third, and fourth vacancies would not be filled). In accordance with the statute, no successor to Thomas Clary was appointed. (The other two temporary judgeships were made permanent.)
7. The act of December 1, 1990, 104 Stat. 5089, as amended by the act of October 6, 1997, 111 Stat. 1173, authorized a temporary judgeship for the court and provided that the first vacancy in the district occurring five years or more after the confirmation date of the judge appointed to fill the temporary judgeship not be filled. In accordance with the statute, no successor to Marjorie Rendell was appointed.

In accordance with the statute, no successor to Albert Watson was appointed.
3. The act of June 2, 1970, 84 Stat. 294, authorized a temporary judgeship for the court and provided that the next vacancy in the district would not be filled. In accordance with the statute, no successor to Michael Sheridan was appointed.
