1. On or about October 31, 1919, the president certified James Boyd involuntarily as disabled in accordance with the act of February 25, 1919, 40 Stat. 1156, which authorized the president to appoint an additional judge for the court and provided that no successor to the judge certified as disabled would be appointed.
2. The act of February 25, 1919, 40 Stat. 1156, was made applicable to the Western District of North Carolina on or about October 31, 1919, when the president certified Judge Boyd as disabled. Edwin Webb was appointed to the additional judgeship authorized by the statute.
3. The act of November 2, 2002, 116 Stat. 1758, authorized a temporary judgeship for the court, extended most recently by the act of March 23, 2024, Pub. L. 118-47, which provided that the first vacancy in the district after April 28, 2025, not be filled.
