1. The act of February 13, 1855, 10 Stat. 606, transferred this judgeship from the District of Illinois. 2. The act of May 24, 1940, 54 Stat. 219, authorized a temporary judgeship for the court and provided that the next vacancy in the district not be filled. In accordance with the statute, no successor to James Wilkerson was appointed. 3. The act of December 1, 1990, 104 Stat. 5089, provided for the appointment of an additional judge for the court if an active judge assumed "the duties of a full-time office of Federal judicial administration." Robert M. Dow, Jr., became counselor to the chief justice of the United States on December 5, 2022, and Jeffrey Cummings was appointed to the additional judgeship authorized by the statute.

On December 10, 1999, the president certified Paul Riley involuntarily as disabled pursuant to the act of September 2, 1957, 71 Stat. 586, which authorized the president to appoint an additional judge for the court and provided that no successor to the judge certified as disabled be appointed. 4. The act of September 2, 1957, 71 Stat. 586, was made applicable to the Southern District of Illinois on December 10, 1999, when the president certified Judge Riley as disabled. Michael Reagan was appointed to the additional judgeship authorized by the statute.
